Building the Wipeout Studios Ecosystem
Independent Unity assets built to work on their own, with useful connections when they are combined.
Connecting the world
Wipeout Studios is developing a collection of Unity assets that can work individually or together. A water system should not require a terrain generator. A camera should not need an entire survival game. Each asset has its own job.
The larger goal is for those separate systems to fit together naturally when a project uses more than one of them.
GroundBreakingTerrain handles landscapes and world streaming. Shorebreak handles oceans and other water. Atmosphere develops the sky and weather effects, while RealisticSunController handles the sun, moon and time of day.
Some of the connections are already taking shape. Shorebreak has an optional way to read terrain information from GroundBreakingTerrain. Atmosphere can use solar information from RealisticSunController. These are source-level integrations, with more testing still to do.
Adding gameplay
The Survival Project is a Unity survival-game template rather than an announced original Wipeout Studios game. It is being developed around player movement, gathering, inventory, interactions and multiplayer foundations.
It also has a connection to GroundBreakingTerrain so gameplay can help tell the terrain system which parts of the world are needed.
FreeFlyCamera provides independent camera movement and collision controls. Being is an earlier-stage character system exploring active ragdolls and movement driven by physics. Both have their own development goals.
Independent, but connected
One important rule is that a useful connection should not become a forced dependency. Developers should be able to pick one asset, several assets or an entire collection according to what their game needs.
The common ground is Unity, with each product developed to take advantage of native ECS systems where they make sense.
What comes next
The ecosystem is still under construction. Some pieces are implemented in source, some integrations need real-world testing, and others are future work.
Wipeout Studios also intends to use these tools as the foundation for its own original games, including survival, shooter, RPG and open-world projects. Those games are separate from the Unity assets and templates.
For now, the focus is making the individual products reliable while building out the connections between them.
Development update. Features and integrations still in progress are not release announcements.
